Solo Piano Recital with Nicholas McCarthy

On 6 June one of Britain’s most inspiring pianists, Nicholas McCarthy, will give a recital at St Cecilia’s Hall in Edinburgh. The only left-hand-only pianist to graduate from the Royal College of Music in its 130-year history, McCarthy has become a great champion for disabled musicians and composers, including the RPS-Shortlisted Concerto for Left Hand by Ben Lunn. Highlights of this concert will include the World Premiere of a new work commissioned by Drake Music Scotland from rising young composer, Joe Stollery.

McCarthy has made a name for himself internationally as the natural champion for repertoire, for one hand, and this recital will demonstrate the wealth and variety of works demonstrating the uniqueness and highly virtuosic nature of the repertoire that exists.

“So many of the pieces commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein in the aftermath of losing his right hand in WWI were scored for massive orchestras,” says Ben Lunn. “A part of the impetus for my own concerto for left hand for Nicholas was to create a work for smaller forces”.

“Following on from the success of this work, including the RPS Award shortlisting, we knew we had to do something equally bold together. This has inspired the solo recital by Nicholas and a brand-new commission from the enigmatic Joe Stollery”.

This performance will include BSL Interpretation of spoken introductions and piece information.
