Figurenotes

A child plays Thumbjam on the iPad. The screen has Figurenotes coloured stripes and shapes on it. A Figurenotes score lies on the table. Text reads 'As it was' at the top of the score.

Figurenotes is an accessible way of notating music. It uses familiar shapes and colours to show pitch and rhythm, breaking down the initial barriers to playing music.

Match

Match the note on the page to the sticker on the instrument. For instruments without stickers, we learn finger patterns

A diagram of a keyboard with Figurenotes colours and shapes on the keys. Below that are circles with letters in - Red, C; Brown, D; Grey, C; Blue, F; Black, G; Yellow, A; Green, B. At the bottom there is a keyboard with red shapes on the C notes. Middle C is a circle, above that is a triangle. Below middle C there is a square and below that there is a cross.

Rhythm

Rhythm is intuitive. The note is as long as it looks.

Musical note durations are shown in standard notation on the left and Figurenotes notation on the right. A 2 bar example is written below.

Progress

Progress through 3 simple stages and you’ll be reading standard music notation

The 3 stages of Figurenotes notation. The first is coloured circles in a line. The second is the same on a stave. The third is standard notation but with coloured noteheads

Figurenotes was invented in Finland in the 90s at the Resonaari Music School. Since then, Drake Music Scotland has developed resources, including accessible notation software, which are now available worldwide. All proceeds from Figurenotes sales go right back into supporting our work with disabled musicians.
